His mother was Katharina Gsell (1707\u20131773) whose maternal grandmother was the famous scientific illustrator\u00a0<a title=\"Maria Sibylla Merian\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maria_Sibylla_Merian\">Maria Sibylla Merian<\/a>\u00a0(1647\u20131717) and whose father was the\u00a0<a title=\"Switzerland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Switzerland\">Swiss<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Baroque\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baroque\">Baroque<\/a>\u00a0painter\u00a0<a title=\"Georg Gsell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georg_Gsell\">Georg Gsell<\/a>\u00a0(1673\u20131740) who had emigrated to Russia in 1716.<\/p><p>Katharina married Leonhard Euler on 7 January 1734 and Johann Albert would be the eldest of their 13 children (only 5 of whom survived childhood).<\/p><p>In 1754 he became a member of the\u00a0<a title=\"Prussian Academy of Sciences\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prussian_Academy_of_Sciences\">Berlin Academy<\/a>. In 1758, he served briefly as director of the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Astronomical Calculation Institute (University of Heidelberg)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Astronomical_Calculation_Institute_(University_of_Heidelberg)\">Astronomical Calculation Institute<\/a>\u00a0(ARI).<\/p><p>On Euler&#8217;s return to\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"St. Petersburg\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Petersburg\">St. Petersburg<\/a>\u00a0in 1765, he was appointed as the chair of physics at the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"St. Petersburg Academy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/St._Petersburg_Academy\">St. Petersburg Academy<\/a>. In St. Petersburg, he lived in his father&#8217;s house; Johann Albrecht&#8217;s family occupied the ground floor. He won a total of seven international academy prizes.<\/p><p>In 1771, Euler was elected a foreign member of the\u00a0<a title=\"Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Royal_Swedish_Academy_of_Sciences\">Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences<\/a>.<\/p><p>In 1789, his youngest daughter married James Bernoulli &#8220;the younger&#8221; (1759\u20131789) who died two months after the wedding in a drowning accident.<\/p><h2><span id=\"Works\" class=\"mw-headline\">Works<\/span><\/h2><ul><li><cite class=\"citation book cs1 cs1-prop-foreign-lang-source\">&#8220;Disquisitio de causa physica electricitatis&#8221;.\u00a0<a class=\"external text\" href=\"https:\/\/gutenberg.beic.it\/webclient\/DeliveryManager?pid=1512488\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>Dissertationes selectae Jo.
