This online LLM in international law, representing 60 ECTS, is one of the world’s few LLM degree programs offered in active cooperation with an intergovernmental organization constituted under international law (the other being offered by the European University Institute).
In partnership with EUCLID (Pôle Universitaire Euclide | Euclid University), an international intergovernmental organization with a university mandate, EULER offers to select students from the general public an external (distance or online) degree program called the EUCLID LLM in International Law (Master of Laws).
As a non-profit institution established in private-public partnership (Dutch foundation), EULER is able to offer affordable, low-tuition programs.
This unique LLM degree, aligned with European standards, focuses on the actual practice of States and intergovernmental organizations, rather than the advancement of academic knowledge for its own sake.
This LLM in International Law is meant to be used by attorneys (lawyers) and professional diplomats, and can be considered an excellent route to pursue a career within governmental bodies, international law firms, NGOs and international organizations.
Thanks to its low tuition and institutional relationships, it is designed to be of special interest to African students.
Within certain parameters, the EULER Online LLM in International Law is customizable, with elective courses focusing on:
EULER's online European LLM in International Law aims to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in the field of international law. Upon completion of the Program, graduates will be able to:
1. Understand and apply the principles of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties (1969): Students will demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the Vienna Convention’s provisions, its application in international relations, and its role in treaty-making and enforcement.
2. Analyze the key international treaties and conventions: Graduates will be proficient in identifying, analyzing, and applying the main treaties and conventions that shape international law, including those related to human rights, trade, and the environment.
3. Critically evaluate the applicability and interpretation of international treaties: Students will develop the ability to assess how treaties are applied in practice, including understanding their scope, limitations, and how they are interpreted by international courts and tribunals.
4. Formulate and present legal arguments in written and oral forms: Graduates will possess advanced skills in writing clear, persuasive, and well-reasoned legal arguments, and will be able to express these arguments effectively in both oral and written formats.
5. Understand the procedural and substantive aspects of treaty negotiation and drafting: Students will gain practical knowledge on the negotiation and drafting of international treaties, including the roles of state and non-state actors in the process.
6. Interpret and apply customary international law and judicial decisions: Graduates will be able to interpret customary international law and judicial decisions in the context of treaty law and international agreements.
7. Evaluate the impact of international treaties on national legal systems: Students will understand the relationship between international treaties and domestic law, including how treaties are incorporated into national legal frameworks.
8. Critically assess the role of international organizations in treaty-making: Students will be able to evaluate the involvement of international organizations, such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organization, in the negotiation, interpretation, and enforcement of international treaties.
These learning outcomes ensure that graduates are equipped with the expertise to navigate the complexities of international law, with a focus on treaties, their interpretation, and effective legal communication.
To pass the Program, you will be required to meet the progression or accreditation and award criteria set out below.
